Behind the Scenes at CaveInn: Preparing for Puppies
Miss Milly
Praying for a safe, smooth delivery for this pretty girl. This is Millyβs first litter.
One of the most common questions we receive from our puppy families is, "What happens before the puppies arrive?" While the excitement often centers around birth announcements and newborn photos, much of the work begins weeks before a litter is due.
Preparing for puppies is a process that combines planning, organization, experience, and a healthy dose of anticipation.
Preparing the Nursery
The first step is getting the nursery ready. Every surface is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Bedding is washed, floors are disinfected, and equipment is checked to ensure everything is in working order.
The whelping box is positioned in a quiet, comfortable space where the mother can settle in before labor begins. We want the environment to be calm, safe, and familiar so she feels secure when the big day arrives.
Stocking Supplies
Just like preparing for a new baby, welcoming a litter requires a long checklist of supplies.
We review our inventory and restock essentials including:
Clean towels and blankets
Puppy scales
Heating equipment
Record-keeping materials
Cleaning and disinfecting supplies
Emergency veterinary supplies
Identification materials for puppies
Having everything organized and within reach allows us to focus entirely on mom and puppies once labor begins.
Monitoring Mom
As the due date approaches, our attention increasingly turns to the expectant mother.
We carefully observe her appetite, activity level, weight, and overall comfort. Daily routines may be adjusted to accommodate her changing needs. Some moms become more affectionate and seek extra attention, while others prefer a little more quiet time.
Each dog is unique, and learning to recognize those individual preferences helps us provide the best care possible.
The Final Countdown
During the last week of pregnancy, preparations intensify. Temperature monitoring may begin, sleeping arrangements are adjusted, and our schedule becomes much more flexible.
Phone chargers are plugged in, cameras are ready, and we keep a close eye on every sign that labor may be approaching.
This stage often feels like waiting for a surprise party where everyone knows it's comingβjust not exactly when.
Why Preparation Matters
A successful whelping experience starts long before the first puppy is born. Careful preparation allows us to respond quickly to the needs of both mother and puppies while creating the safest possible environment.
When our puppy families see those first newborn photos, they are seeing the result of weeks of planning, preparation, and care.
