Joel Gray - Breeder/Builder
Joel joined the CaveInn team full-time in 2020 after a remarkable career. In February of that same year, he made the significant decision to retire from his long-standing position in the newspaper industry, where he dedicated 34 years of his life working at the Charles City Press and Northeast Iowa Shopper. “It was absolutely time to join Penny full-time at the CaveInn,” says Joel enthusiastically. “This venture is truly a bucket list item for me, and I couldn’t be more excited about it. We are always focusing on improving and building upon our solid foundation, and now I can be present and engaged with every single step of the way.” After 12 years spent juggling the birth of every single puppy while simultaneously fulfilling his duties as General Manager at the Press, this transition to CaveInn is a welcome and refreshing change for him. Joel exclaims with eagerness, “there are simply too many projects that need my attention!”
Penny, sharing in the excitement of this new chapter, adds with a smile, “Welcome to the jungle!”

Penny spent her former professional career in Bank Marketing, where she distinguished herself as a Certified Financial Marketing Professional. After retiring from the financial industry in the year 2019, Penny decided to embark on a new adventure and began her journey into the fascinating world of Animal Behavior. Now, as an Animal Behavior Consultant and Certified Dog Trainer, she feels that her extensive background and experience add significant credibility to their dedicated breeding program. “I have always been in the ‘people’ business,” recalls Penny. “Raising puppies and providing our puppy parents with knowledgeable support allows me to continue along this rewarding path that I truly love.”
Joel humorously comments, “…ask my wife, she’s practically an encyclopedia when it comes to animal care and behavior.”
